There are several ways to find the published date of a web page in a website. In this article we will explore all the possible ways to find the published date of a website.
Websites are a wonderful source of information. Some information are evergreen, but some information has the time validity. In that case readers always look for the published date of the web page while seeking for the information. But, what if you don’t find the published date in the web page. Well, some websites actually hide the published date from the web page to keep their content fresh.
If the website has such information which is regardless of time, then there is nothing bad. But, if the website is about news, social media or health, then hiding published date from the web page is a very bad thing. If you do so, you will loose your reader’s trust. But now I am at reader’s side and I am here to help all of you to find out the published date of a website.
Here are some cool ways to find the published date of a website:
1. Look on the Web page
Most of the websites or blogs display the published date under the title of the post along with the name of the author. If you don’t find the date here, scroll down to the bottom to the article. Usually you can find here some information about the author and the published date.
2. Check the Post URL
Look at the URL in the address bar. Some websites auto fill the web address with the date when the post was written. You may find the full date here or you might find just the month and the year. Make sure that you are on the specific web page and not on an archive or index page. This is not always helpful though, as most people prefer to make their URL shorter and easier to search, and they don’t use the date.
3. Check the Comments
While many blog authors hide the time stamp on the post, they do not remove it from the comments. Scroll the comments until you find the earliest date, that will be the closest date to when the post was published. This is not the most accurate method but it will give a pretty good idea of when the article was published.
4. Check Source Code
You can see the source code of a web page by right clicking on the page and selecting “view page source”. It will open a new tab filled with code of the website. This page carries lot of information which is not listed on the website. You can open this source code page directly by pressing Control+U on window and Command+U on mac.
Once the source code page will open, press Control+F. It will open a search bar on the page. You can enter “publisheddate” or “datepublished” in the search bar and find the published date of a website.
5. Google the Web Page
- Go to google.com and copy-paste the full URL of any web page in the search box with the inurl: operator (e.g. inurl:www.example.com). Hit enter.
- Now go to browser address bar (Ctrl+L in Firefox & Chrome or Alt+D in Internet Explorer) and copy-paste “&as_qdr=y15” at the end of the Google search URL. Press enter again.
- Google will load the search results again but this time, you’ll see the actual publication date of the web page next to the title in Google search results.
